The European Commission has decided to set up a new service that will be operational from 1 March 2021, namely the Service for Agreements between the EU and the United Kingdom, which will be under the direct authority of the President of the Commission and will support the effective and rigorous implementation and monitoring of agreements with the United Kingdom. This service will cooperate with the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
The mandate of the Task Force on Relations with the United Kingdom, within the Secretariat of the European Commission, will end on 1 March, following the conclusion of the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement on 24 December 2020, which was the main objective of this institution.
From 1 February 2021, Michel Barnier, Head of the Task Force on Relations with the United Kingdom, will become Special Adviser to President von der Leyen. He will advise the President on the implementation of the EU-UK Withdrawal Agreement and provide expertise to complete the EU ratification process of the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement.
