The initiative calls for amending Article 147(1) of the Labor Code so that employees from single-parent families are included in the category of individuals entitled to additional paid time off.

Currently, this benefit is granted to employees working in difficult, dangerous, or harmful conditions, to people with disabilities, to the blind, and to young people up to 18 years of age.

According to Social Assistance Law No. 292/2011, a single-parent family consists of a single person – whether unmarried, widowed, or divorced – and the children in their care who live in the same household.

The measure aims to help single parents raise their children more easily, manage their family responsibilities, and achieve a better work-life balance.

The bill, supported by lawmakers from several Romanian political parties, is set to be debated by the Chamber of Deputies, which serves as the decision-making body. If adopted, enacted, and published in the Official Gazette during the last quarter of 2026, the law would take effect on January 1, 2027.
