Workplace Accident in Industry: A Fall from Height Resulting in Temporary Work Incapacity

In an industrial sector company, a routine maintenance maneuver on a machine turned into a serious accident, resulting in temporary work incapacity for the worker involved. The incident occurred when a mechanic climbed onto the machine’s access platform to perform a routine inspection. Due to the absence of personal protective equipment (PPE) and the lack of compliant side railings, the employee slipped and fell from a height of approximately two meters.
As a result of the impact, the worker suffered a forearm fracture and shoulder contusions. He was urgently transported to the hospital, where doctors confirmed the need for immobilization and granted medical leave. The employer immediately reported the event to the Territorial Labour Inspectorate, as required by Law no. 319/2006.
According to procedure, the employer formed an accident investigation committee, which analyzed the circumstances of the event. The preliminary conclusion indicated two main causes: failure to use PPE and the non-compliance of the platform’s safety features. The incident was classified as a workplace accident with temporary incapacity, and the FIAM (Work Accident Investigation Report) was officially completed and submitted.
For the company, the incident meant not only the temporary absence of a qualified worker, but also the need to implement corrective measures. These included additional staff training, repairs to the platform’s structure, and regular checks on PPE compliance.
This case serves as a reminder that, regardless of how routine daily tasks may seem, real risks exist and can have serious consequences. Strict adherence to safety instructions and maintaining equipment in proper condition are essential safeguards against events that can endanger workers’ health and disrupt company operations.
