OSH coordination on construction sites – safety starts at the design stage

Occupational safety and health (OSH) on construction sites does not begin on the first working day, but already at the design stage. OSH coordination at this phase involves the preparation of occupational safety and health documentation, which clearly defines the responsibilities of all parties involved in the future execution of the works. The OSH Plan becomes a reference document, annexed to the contract between the designer and the beneficiary, and its purpose is to prevent risks before they materialize on site.

During the execution phase, OSH coordination plays an active and continuous role. The safety plan established during the design stage is implemented and adapted to the realities of the construction site, while the general principles of accident prevention are applied at every stage of the work. Periodic site visits allow verification of how the general contractor and subcontractors comply with OSH measures, and the findings are recorded in reports and in the coordination logbook.

At this stage, the OSH coordinator, together with the beneficiary, also submits to the Labour Inspectorate (ITM) the prior notification regarding the companies involved in the execution, material deliveries, equipment, and transport. All events relevant from an occupational safety and health perspective are recorded, ensuring traceability, control, and, above all, a safe working environment for everyone involved.
