Which Safety Measures Were Not Followed? Fatal Incident on Construction Site

A serious workplace accident that recently occurred in a commune in Bacău once again highlights the consequences of neglecting safety measures. During sewage installation works, a worker lost his life after unsecured earth walls collapsed on him.
According to the investigation carried out by the Bacău Territorial Labour Inspectorate, the required protective panels for reinforcing the trench had not been installed, and the activity was conducted without complying with the minimum safety requirements provided by legislation. The absence of these measures violates the provisions of Government Decision 300/2006, which mandates the support of trench walls in the case of deep excavations precisely to prevent soil collapses.
Additionally, the investigation revealed shortcomings in the supervision of the works, staff training, and the use of personal protective equipment. Even though the company administrator invoked worker negligence, the law is clear: responsibility for ensuring compliance with occupational safety and health regulations lies with the employer.
The tragedy in Bacău demonstrates that a moment of inattention or an apparently minor cost-saving decision in organizing the construction site can cost human lives. Following procedures, daily inspection of working conditions, and continuous staff training are not optional — they are the foundation of safe and responsible operations.
