ISU Inspection: Fines in Retail for Non-Compliance with Fire Prevention Regulations

An inspection carried out by the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISU) in a commercial space revealed serious deficiencies in fire prevention and extinguishing measures. As a result, significant fines were imposed, along with immediate corrective actions.
Inspectors found that fire extinguishers had not been checked periodically, indoor hydrants were partially blocked by improperly stored merchandise, and evacuation plans were outdated or not visibly posted. In addition, safety markings were incomplete, and staff had not received recent fire safety training, contrary to the provisions of MAI Order no. 163/2007.
The company was fined 15,000 lei and required to quickly implement a remediation plan. ISU imposed strict deadlines for clearing evacuation routes, updating evacuation plans, and conducting a practical fire drill with employees.
This case shows that in retail, just like in industry, fire safety measures are not just legal obligations but essential conditions for protecting the lives of customers and employees, as well as for ensuring business continuity. Neglecting them can result in costly fines or even suspension of activity.
