Disbursement of eyeglasses for employees working at computers

The Government has recently approved a decision which lays down the rules for the reimbursement by employers of vision correction devices (including eyeglasses) for employees who frequently work at computers.

According to the new provisions, employees of public institutions who use screen equipment (computer, laptop, etc.) on a daily basis for a significant period of time may be entitled to a reimbursement of the cost of these devices, up to a limit of 500 lei per person.

Who is entitled to the reimbursement?

Staff of public institutions who regularly use screen equipment.

Employees who, following a medical check-up by an occupational medicine doctor, receive a recommendation from an ophthalmologist for the use of special glasses required for their work.

How does the procedure work?

Compulsory medical examination

On taking up employment, periodically or if you have any problems with your eyesight.

If the occupational physician considers it necessary, the employee is referred to an ophthalmologist.

Medical prescription

The ophthalmologist confirms the need for glasses for computer work.

Reimbursement of expenses

The employee buys the glasses and keeps the supporting documents (invoice, receipt or bank statement).

The employer settles the amount up to 500 lei on the basis of the doctor’s recommendation and the payment documents.

If the amount spent is less, the employer will reimburse only the actual amount paid.

When can the reimbursement be claimed?

The first purchase of the special corrective device.

At the change of diopters.

Damage to the frames or lenses due to normal wear and tear (but not earlier than one year after the last reimbursement).

Other obligations of employers

Must provide regular risk assessments of the risks associated with the use of screen equipment.

Plan breaks or alternation of activities to avoid visual strain on employees.

Implement measures to improve working conditions.

These provisions help protect employees’ visual health and provide a safer and more comfortable working environment.
