Minimum wage by economic sector

In the Official Gazette (Part I) no. 1185 of November 28, 2024 was published the Government Decision no. 1506/2024 on the establishment of the minimum gross basic salary guaranteed in payment.

The gross national minimum wage is the minimum amount that an employer is obliged by law to pay to its employees.

According to Government Decision No. 1506/2024, as of January 1, 2025, the gross minimum wage will increase from 3,700 to 4,050 lei.

At the same time, by Emergency Ordinance no. 156/2024 (published in MO no. 1334/31.12.2024), the Government decided to abolish the differentiated minimum wage for employees in the agricultural sector and food industry. Thus, as of January 1, 2025, the minimum wage in these sectors will be RON 4,050, equivalent to RON 24.496/hour.

Also, OUG No. 156/2024 maintains the minimum wage in the construction sector at 4,582 lei, starting January 1, 2025, equivalent to approximately 27.714 lei/hour.

It is important to note that any change in the monthly gross basic salary, bonuses or allowances must be reported in the General Register of Employees’ Records (REVISAL) within 20 working days from the date of the change, according to HG (Government Decree) no. 905/2017.

The increase in the minimum gross national wage as of January 1, 2025 will also have an impact on the remuneration of day laborers, according to Law no. 52/2011, which establishes a direct correlation between their pay and the minimum gross wage. Thus, the minimum hourly rate for day laborers will increase to 24,496 lei, which means that for an 8-hour working day they will receive a minimum of 196 lei.

At the same time, the banking sector benefits from a sectoral minimum wage set by the collective bargaining agreement at 4,100 lei until May 1, 2025, after which it will increase to 4,500 lei.
